High Conversion Ratio Integrated Voltage Regulator using novel Embedded Inductor

Presented by: Claudio Alvarez, Prahalad Murali, and Madhavan Swaminathan, Georgia Tech

Abstract
High-density package embedded inductors enable the miniaturization of high conversion ratio Integrated Voltage Regulators (IVR), like 48V to 1V and 12V to 1V IVRs. However, the required low duty cycle and high switching frequency impose constraints to both the inductor and power stage topology making a co-design approach mandatory. In this task, we propose a co-design framework that uses the inductor metric effective AC resistance per unit inductance (Racx) which is a function of the duty cycle and frequency. Using this metric, the inductor can be sized and the frequency and conversion ratio constraint can be found, which are then used to optimize the power stage topology. In addition, to meet the result of this analysis, a new embedded inductor is presented that can achieve 400 nH at 2 Mhz, DC resistance of 16 mOhm, and a maximum inductance density of 125 nH/mm2.
